While the heavy load that children carry on their shoulders has often been the subject of debates, the mental stress that they undergo is a subject that has seldom come up for discussion.

At a lecture on ‘The academic burden of education system on children’ organized by the center for child and the law of National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Chaitra G Krishna from Nimhans and special needs educator Champa Saha spoke on the ills plaguing the education system.

Champa said children have become fearful of committing mistakes, which has led to a failure in understanding the virtues of knowledge. “We seem to have got accustomed to the deteriorating education system. Why hasn’t there been a collective reformation,” she asked. Calling for experimental methods of teaching, Champa said, “The day teachers begin using the concept of ‘why’ for every topic taught, there will be a sharing”.
